MLeth's Thoughts - DA Groups

Journal Entry: Thu Jun 16, 2011, 7:23 AM
Lets bring up a subject that I've been kinda bias about.. And that is the Group-function here on deviantART.

When the groups first started showing up here I thought of them as a place where poeple with the same tastes could meet up and socialize. Or a group with fans of a certain franchise would share fan arts with each other!

But now I see them just as a way of getting more watchers and favs. But what's wrong about watchers and favs may you ask? Nothing! But as it is now people that submits their art in as many groups as possible will get the most attention on here. Which sounds pretty logical.
But I find it really unfair. It is basically set up like this:

Submitting pictures in groups is open for everyone, sure. But it is up to you to find all of them.
What I think is unfair about this is that the people who doesnt submit their pictures in groups will of course not get as much attention as the ones who does. It's basically like a race; The ones who finds the most groups wins. And I don't think that's what art is about.
Not only do you have to worry about your picture being up to par but you have to worry about not getting noticed because of the group-whores casting a giant shadow upon your work if you don't submit your picture to all groups.
Me for instance, I don't bother finding all of these groups and submitting my pictures to them because:

1: I am lazy

2: I don't have time

3: I think it is a sign of attention-whoring

4: I think that EVERYONE should get just as much attention.

It is almost like special treatment for the ones that for some reason find AAAALL of the groups that their picture is representing.
Sure, you can join all the groups or have them in your group-list or whatever so you can quickly put your picture on the groups directly when submitting your picture.

But again! Why should getting attention be an option?! It just boggles my mind. It's just as pointless as paying money for outfits for your freaking deviantART Lama..
Sure, I would've love to get more watchers and favs and of course I don't think I will get more of those by not doing anything but seriously..

Maybe I'm being harsch about it, but I REALLY think it's pointless. Groups will become what you make of them I suppose.. But still.

And really, do you really need 30+ groups to satisfy your ego? : )

EDIT: I realized one or two things in the comments already.. xD And when I think about it this rant was rather unfair.. Oh well. That's what happens when I hate on stuff.

/Shorter MLeth's Thoughts today.. MLeth rant out.

but some groups are real disappointing =P
they don't even post stuff related to the group
like for fantastic females with rules "deviantation hast do be female"
the post simple pics of harry potter and over stuff

its nice to see ur stuff accepted in some groups and get some more watchers
but for that u gat spammed with some ugly stuff u never wanted to see =P

I tend to join groups not submit anything and if I'm not getting anything from them I often leave the group. I have submitted once in a great awhile (or attempted to) for events and that, but I usually come to a problem that it doesn't get accepted no madder what I do and so I gave up. Really doing it for views and that I don't bother, I got 40 watchers right now and I'm pretty happy with them I don't want people watching or faving me because My art was in 50 or so groups I want them to come to my profile and enjoy my works for the works I've done.

well the reason I group-whore is kind of for attention... but not faves or watches
it's just that the more attention my work gets, the more likely it is that I'll get feedback on how I can improve

My question with groups is if they are joining that many groups to submit to how are they keeping up with all the new deviations coming in.

I think it kind of scary when something is listed as been featured in 50 different groups :(

unfortunately, groups are the only way for unknown artists to share their pictures properly. lets assume youre new on DA. You would like to get as many views as possible of course, and groups are a great way to get them. However, I agree with you that groups are cripilled to a storehouse of pictures.
but as i said, Its most likely the best or the only effective way on DA to share your art. :(

Amen bro. dA is a popularity contest. Just like youtube, or anything else. I was gonna rant about this and several other things a week ago, but I figured no one would care about it lol

I remember about 2 years ago I joined a new group. They accepted ALL art as long as it went by thier guidlines (which were simple, no porn/expict content and that stuff) then about a year ago they started getting popular.. and stopped adding ALL art, saying you needed to actuallY WORK...understandable right? Well I added a picture that took me EIGHT HOURS to do! and they comment back saying it was just a sketch and crappy basically. .All thier art they accept is by more professional artist, no new person can submit because thier art, thier HARD WORKED on art is "doodles". .groups just suck :l

I tried to join a group but I was too lazy too :D
I find awkward that group system

I also don't give a shit about pageviews/favs/attention, that's why I only have a few pageviews and followers. a lot of follower will feed ur ego but it wont makes you a good artist :<
it could be a way to motivateyoursefl though...

boa. it's too complicated for me to poll anyway :3 here's a drawing of the new "hatsune miku" that you'r gonna see everywhere soon if you don't already.
